What is the difference between sales and use tax?

Both taxes are due when merchandise is used or consumed in Illinois. The main difference is that a retailer or service person collects the sales tax, but use tax is paid directly to the Illinois Department of Revenue. Use tax is paid directly to the department by the person who uses or consumes the property because tax was not collected when the merchandise was sold.
