Why is the sales tax rate higher than 6.25 percent?

The sales tax rate may be higher in some areas because some local jurisdictions are allowed to impose their own taxes. Generally, tax rates are determined based on the location of the sale. See Illinois Administrative Code, Title 86, Section 270.115 for more information. See also the Tax Rate Finder to confirm Illinois sales tax rates for specific locations.
