Why is the sales tax rate higher than 6.25 percent?

The tax rate may be higher in some areas because some local jurisdictions are allowed to impose their own taxes. Generally, tax rates are determined based on the location of the sale. See Illinois Administrative Code, Section 270.115 for more information. Please see our publication, "Illinois Sales Tax Rate Reference Manual" to confirm Illinois sales tax rates for specific locations.
