If my parents claimed me as a dependent on their individual income tax return, can I also claim myself on my return?

If someone claimed you as a dependent on their return for tax year ending December 31, 2012, you will enter zero on Line 10a.

For Line 10b:

  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is greater than $2,050, you cannot claim yourself.  You will put zero on Line 10b.
  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is less than or equal to $2,050, you can claim yourself.  You will put "1' on Line 10b.

For tax year ending December 31, 2008, through December 31, 2011, if someone claimed you as a dependent on their return you will enter a zero on Line 10a.

For Line 10b:

  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is greater than $2,000, you cannot claim yourself.  You will put zero on Line 10b.
  • If your Form IL-1040, Line 9, is less than or equal to $2,000, you can claim yourself.  You will put "1' on Line 10b.
