What form do I complete if I am an Illinois resident and am purchasing or acquiring an automobile from another Illinois resident that is not a car dealer?

When one Illinois resident purchases a car from another Illinois resident in a private transaction (the seller is not a car dealer), the sale and subsequent tax due is reported on Form RUT-50.  This form must also be filled out if the acquisition is by gift or transfer.  Form more information about reporting the tax due, see Form RUT-50 instructions; Publication STS-76, Vehicle Tax Guide; or 86 Ill. Adm. Code 151.
