What does the Illinois Department of Revenue require to show proof that sales tax was paid to another state on the purchase of a vehicle when filing the Form RUT-25?

The department requires that a copy of the bill of sale that clearly states the amount of tax that was paid to another state is provided.  If you do not have or cannot obtain a bill of sale, we will accept the following:

  • a dealer's invoice;
  • a letter from a leasing company;
  • a letter from the selling dealer;
  • a fair market valuation from a licensed Illinois dealer; or
  • a copy of the lease agreement showing the financial information.
