Why does my credit report show a lien from the Illinois Department of Revenue?

We (IDOR) may have filed a lien to make a legal claim to your property as security or payment for past-due debt with the state of Illinois.

Even if a debt has been paid or corrected, your credit report may continue to show a lien if a lien release has not been recorded.  Prior to 2002, we would send a lien release to the taxpayer once the debt was paid, and the taxpayer was responsible for filing the lien release with the recording agency.  Occasionally, a taxpayer would fail to file the release.  In 2002, the law was changed so that now we record the lien release, but only after the taxpayer pays us the recording fee.

Contact the Lien Unit to find out about the items for which we have taken this collection action, to obtain a lien release or payoff amount, or for other lien-related questions.
